UK REVIEW–It’s been a tough few years for the Pro Evolution Soccer series. After first showing signs of stagnation in 2008, it’s subsequently been overtaken by FIFA in the area it always dominated: gameplay. While Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 doesn’t stop the rot, it’s a step in the right direction. The gameplay returns the series to its simulation roots and the online mode boasts much improved features and functionality. That said, major issues persist, including the stilted animation, terrible commentary, and a lack of licenses that have long spoiled the series. Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 plays a good game of football that’s substantially different to its rival FIFA, but in the face of such strong competition, it still falls short of expectations.
While the tweaks to this year’s gameplay are minimal, the result is a better game overall. The speed has been reduced to make the game feel more like a simulation, and the goalkeepers have become much more efficient, which lowers the overall scorelines. These two changes address some of the major criticism from fans, but many of the old problems remain. Player animation looks incredibly stilted thanks to simple repeated running animations, while the transitions between moves are sharp and generally unpolished. The headline gameplay feature is 360-degree player control, which should make players more natural to control, but there’s little noticeable difference in terms of the way these players move over last year.
What Pro Evo 2010 does offer is an incredible amount of player detail, with facial likenesses that are among the best in the sports genre. Famous players, such as Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, look uncannily realistic, with incredibly lifelike faces, hair, and limbs. The likenesses can be hit or miss–Lionel Messi looks much better than Michael Owen, for example, and the likenesses are much more accurate in the upper leagues than in lesser known teams. There’s a much better sense of physicality to the players than there was in last year’s game, with head-on clashes resulting in the weaker player hitting the floor and some much more involved tussles for the ball.

If Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 was the reboot that put the series back in the running, then Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 is the game that pushes it straight to the finals. While it offers more in the way of refinement than something completely new, there are tweaks in PES 12 that change the way it plays, removing many of the frustrations that plagued previous games in the series. AI improvements ensure your teammates attack, defend, and pass in a more believable manner, while smoother animations mean you’re treated to a better-looking experience. Not all the tweaks hit the mark; off-the-ball control is tricky to master, online modes feel sparse next to FIFA, and a renewed sense of speed actually makes PES 12 less realistic than its predecessor. But it’s that very speed that also makes it a great game by offering up an exciting, fluid game of football that’s a joy a play.
Last year’s PES saw the introduction of a more accurate passing system that required you to place the ball precisely, controlling direction and power. Ultimately, this made PES a slower and more considered experience, pushing it firmly into the simulation space occupied by FIFA. While PES 12 retains this passing system, the overall flow of the game has changed. It’s faster and more fluid, with the change being immediately apparent when you see players moving more gracefully than ever before. Performing fast-paced runs, passing long balls, or going for glory with an optimistic shot from outside the box is easier than in previous games, and a lot of fun to boot.
PES 12’s fluidity doesn’t mean that realism has taken a backseat, though. Numerous AI tweaks change the way your team members play, making them less of a hindrance to each match. Some of those tweaks are immediately apparent while others are subtler, but all have an impact on gameplay. For instance, improvements made to the AI mean that computer-controlled players offer more support. The AI is actually good at anticipating your next move, running to open areas of the pitch just as you receive the ball. This lets you make better use of open space for more inventive plays. Active AI also incorporates improvements to dummy and diagonal runs. If you run in wide, a supporting player will run with you, zigzagging around the opposition and placing himself in an open area so you can get a pass in and cross the ball into the box.

After a steady rise in quality over the last few years, FIFA 10 added yet more welcome new features and game modes while refining the core gameplay. It’s a tough act to follow for FIFA 11, but thanks to more realistic gameplay, new game modes, and more features, this is the best and most comprehensive FIFA game yet. The main improvements are refinements to the gameplay, rather than revolutionary new game modes as we’ve seen in previous years, but they’re significant enough to make EA Sports’ latest offering well worth the upgrade.
The changes to this year’s game aren’t all immediately apparent, but they are welcome and make the game deeper and more realistic. The biggest change is the physicality between players–whether it’s a winger holding off a defender, or two players tussling in the box, FIFA 11’s players are constantly fighting each other for the ball. This increased tactility has an impact on the gameplay, adding an emphasis on player strength and speed, making player interaction more brutal, and producing some nice touches that add to the realism. For example, if you perform a crunching tackle, the tackler will sportingly tap the downed player on the back as he runs by to collect the ball. There’s also much more variation to the passes and shots; you won’t see the same shots being taken repeatedly, while positioning, footedness, and environmental factors such as rain all have a real and notable impact. Scoring is also more difficult than before; improved goalies are harder to beat than in FIFA 10, and shots, particularly those lobbed over the keeper, are harder to get in the net.
Much more emphasis has also been put on individual players and how they operate within the team, thanks to the new Personality Plus feature. This is a system of attributes that affect players’ skills, from how accurately they pass the ball to how quickly they can control it from the air. Topflight teams boast players with skills across the board, and to get the most from players you need to know how to play to their individual strengths. For example, a player like Wayne Rooney has an inherent ability to score from short range, whereas Steven Gerrard is a much better long-distance shooter. The system works well, and you can feel the difference between players as you control them on the pitch. This personality system also extends to celebrations–you can now hold down the A button to do trademark post-goal dances from famous players, and if you’re online, you can also interact with the goal scorer with new team-based celebrations.

Hot Pursuit is a Need for Speed game in name only. If you’re familiar with the Burnout series, you’ll immediately feel at home with the handling in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Licensed cars from the likes of Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Porsche can be made to slide around corners with only the briefest of touches on the brake, and you earn nitrous by driving dangerously close to other vehicles and into oncoming traffic. Furthermore, there are plenty of shortcuts available if you stray from the Seacrest County roads, and should you wreck your ride while attempting to take one, you’re treated to a glorious slow-motion shot as panels buckle and debris starts to fly. A similar slow-motion treatment is used to alert you when additional cops show up to chase you down and when you successfully take out an opponent, which adds a welcome touch of Hollywood to these high-speed chases. Need For Speed Pro Street – PC

It can’t be easy to be a game developer in charge of releasing a new game in a series every year. People don’t want the same game over and over, yet they’re unhappy if the game strays too far from the established formula. EA deserves credit for trying something different with Need for Speed ProStreet, but the new direction of the series fails to live up to the level of the previous games. There’s still a solid racing experience here, and the online component of the Xbox 360 is quite good; but the game’s premise is uninteresting and the in-game advertising is over the top. In the end, ProStreet is just another decent but uninspired racing game.
Unlike the last two Need for Speed games, which told the story of an underground street racer through campy yet entertaining cutscenes, ProStreet follows the legal street racing career of Ryan Cooper. The game still uses cutscenes to try to instill some story into the proceedings–something about Ryan getting dissed by a big-time street racer–but it’s uninteresting thanks to terrible voice acting and unlikable characters. Ignoring the story, it’s your goal to head to different events, dominate them, challenge the best of the best, and then take on Ryo, the man who disrespected you after your first race.
Thanks to the sheer number of race days you’ll need to win, it will take a long time to get to Ryo. Each race day consists of a number of different events. Most of these will be familiar to anyone who’s played previous Need for Speed games. Grip races are standard races with eight cars on the track, and your goal is to finish first. Other events have you trying to get the fastest time or highest speed through checkpoints, or the best time out of your class of cars. Drift racing is back, but has been revamped and is actually fun this time around since you don’t lose all your points for going off the track. You’ll also be doing a lot of drag racing. It’s fun for a bit, but gets old quickly thanks in no small part to the preceding minigame in which you have to heat up your tires–it’s lame, and you have to do it before each of the three rounds. While there’s no shortage of events, there isn’t a whole lot of variety. Many of them feel the same–you just want to go fast. This makes the game grow old quickly, a problem when there are so many events to slog through before you reach the end.

For the most part, the reaction to the last few Need for Speed games was the same: “Why aren’t they more like Need for Speed Most Wanted?” “Where are the cheesy cutscenes and the over-the-top cop chases?” It seems as if EA heard those cries, because for better or for worse, Need for Speed Undercover feels like Most Wanted.
In Undercover you play the role of…wait for it…an undercover officer. Along with agent Chase Linh, played by the attractive Maggie Q, your job is to take down a group of street racers that have somehow become involved in an international smuggling ring. The story is told via campy cutscenes that fail to capture the charm of Most Wanted thanks to uninteresting characters and a predictable plot. Having a story provides incentive to make it through race after race, but the whole “this is cheesy so it’s cool” thing feels kind of forced this time around.
Like many other Need for Speed games, all of your racing will take place on the streets of a fictitious open-world city–here it’s the Tri-City Bay area. You’ll start with a lousy vehicle, but it won’t be long before you’re able to snag a pink slip to a nicer ride. As you progress you’ll earn cash, which can be used to unlock (50+) new vehicles from manufacturers such as Nissan, Dodge, Cadillac, Ford, Porsche, Lamborghini, BMW, Aston Martin, Mitsubishi, and more. If you’re into tuning individual aspects of your ride or purchasing individual parts you can do that, but if you’re not into tinkering you can purchase an upgrade package and be on your way.
Not only will you earn money for winning an event, you’ll earn driving points for dominating it–basically beating it really, really bad. You can power up a number of your driving attributes, but they don’t have a noticeable effect on how your car handles. As long as you drive fast you’ll probably dominate, but there are occasional races where you’ll totally obliterate the time needed to dominate an event, but you’ll still lose to the CPU. The game also encourages you to drive with style and drift, draft, and drive really close to other cars, but other than increasing your nitrous there’s little to gain from doing so. That said, the new J-Turn mechanic, which lets you bust quick 180s, is invaluable when chasing down rivals or evading the cops. You’ll use it because it’s useful, though, not because it gets you heroic driving points.

Shift 2: Unleashed is a highly challenging and exciting racing game which improves greatly on its predecessor. New features, such as the first-person helmet cam and the reworked graphics engine, make the driving seat a more thrilling place to be than it was in the first game. However, the car handling continues to tread the line between arcade and simulation, without mastering either. While Shift 2 turns the corner from full simulation, a compelling single-player Career mode, great online features and new Autolog integration make it an exciting and well-rounded package overall.
Shift 2 begins very much like the original, with a quick two-lap practice session to help it decide what difficulty level and which driving assists you require. Keeping your car out of the grass and away from the barriers becomes considerably more difficult as you turn off the assists, which means you can increase the challenge as you progress. However, Shift 2 is definitely not a true simulation of driving. The cars have a tendency to understeer in fast corners and oversteer in slow ones. This makes the game more exciting, allowing for big slides and a frantic pace, but it can also cause frustration if you prefer pure simulation, because it’s difficult to predict your car’s behaviour. Faster cars behave inconsistently at the same turn on different laps, so consistent lap times can be elusive. The game doesn’t have a rewind feature, which adds to the frustration if you crash during one of the longer races at the end of the Career mode. The unpredictable handling means you may need to spend a lot of time tweaking the advanced control options as well, especially when using a wheel and pedals because the default settings just aren’t responsive enough.

The cars in The Run feel good to drive. The wide range of vehicles on offer includes sports cars that respond tightly to your every command and muscle cars that are tough to tame, but regardless of what you’re driving, racing in The Run is about balancing speed with control. Sure, you’ve got highways on which you can gun the throttle and cruise at top speed, but more often than not, you’re on stretches of road with some tricky turns. Using your brakes effectively, maintaining a smart racing line, and speedily exiting the turns is crucial to maintaining a good time, and it feels great to put these powerful cars through their paces.

It can’t be easy to be a game developer in charge of releasing a new game in a series every year. People don’t want the same game over and over, yet they’re unhappy if the game strays too far from the established formula. EA deserves credit for trying something different with Need for Speed ProStreet, but the new direction of the series fails to live up to the level of the previous games. There’s still a solid racing experience here, and the online component of the Xbox 360 is quite good; but the game’s premise is uninteresting and the in-game advertising is over the top. In the end, ProStreet is just another decent but uninspired racing game.
Unlike the last two Need for Speed games, which told the story of an underground street racer through campy yet entertaining cutscenes, ProStreet follows the legal street racing career of Ryan Cooper. The game still uses cutscenes to try to instill some story into the proceedings–something about Ryan getting dissed by a big-time street racer–but it’s uninteresting thanks to terrible voice acting and unlikable characters. Ignoring the story, it’s your goal to head to different events, dominate them, challenge the best of the best, and then take on Ryo, the man who disrespected you after your first race.

Need for Speed Most Wanted is the new release and the nineteenth installment in the long-running Need for Speed series. Developed by EA Black Box and Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts, this videogame has received many positive reviews and won important awards since its release. For instance, it won the Spike Videogame Awards in 2012 for Best Driving Game and was nominated at the BAFTA Awards in 2013 for Best British Game and Best Online Multiplayer.
In this classic racing videogame you will be free to move around the city as you compete against other drivers. Although this title allows you to play by yourself with its single-player mode, you will always have an extra opponent while you drive. The police will try to chase and intercept you at all times, and will add extra adrenaline to the race.

After the great success that was Need for Speed Most Wanted for PC and consoles, EA Swiss Sarl decided to launch it for mobile platforms. Developed by Firemonkeys, the mobile version offers a stunning racing experience on your 4 inch screen. This version has very good graphics and, of course, your favorite cars. The Corvette, M3, Mustang or Aventator brands are at your disposal. The gameplay remains the same; you need Speed Points to appear in the Most Wanted List. However, there is a drawback which may disappoint some players. The game is not as open-world as its PC and console versions. It is menu-based, with old-school races and action due to device limitations.
The controls of this version are simple. The acceleration of the cars is automatic, but apart from this, vehicles are quite controllable. To brake you just have to tap and hold the left side of the screen, to powerslide, tap and hold the right side. By swiping, you will be able to activate nitro boosts. The gyroscope in the device is useful, since you can use it to move your car, but a touch wheel is also available.
